Last week, the Milken Institute’s State Technology and Science Index confirmed that Rhode Island has made progress in its effort to become a regional and national hub for science, technology and innovation. Milken’s Index uses a variety of indicators to measure how well each state is performing in today’s global knowledge-based economy.

Rhode Island Breaks Into Top 10 of Science and Technology Report

Rhode Island has moved up to 10th place in the 2008 State Science and Technology Index, released by California-based Milken Institute. The report uses a host of indicators to paint a comprehensive picture of how well states are performing in today’s highly competitive knowledge-based economy.

STAC Launches New Website for R.I. Research Community

The Rhode Island Science and Technology Council has debuted a new statewide collaborative research website that creates a one-stop-shop where researchers, entrepreneurs and community leaders can learn about research and development in R.I. register for events, apply for programs and access a searchable database of research equipment and shared facilities.

Statewide Research Alliance Bolstered by Support from Brown, URI

The Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) today presented its plans for expanding the Rhode Island Research Alliance and announced that Brown University and the University of Rhode Island (URI) both will contribute $25,000 to support the next phase of Research Alliance activity.

24 Scientists, 14 Institutions Receive Funding for Collaborative Projects

The Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) announced the awardees of the 2008 Collaborative Research Award program. The awards will provide support to nine projects, representing 24 scientists from 14 research organizations across Rhode Island. Award recipients in 2008 include academic and industry scientists pursuing research in medicine, police forensics, engineering, chemistry, biology, oceanography and environmental science.

Innovation Tax Credit Stimulates Investment in Rhode Island Companies

The RIEDC Board of Directors has pre-approved six companies to pursue investments that will be eligible for the state's new Innovation Tax Credit program. The credit will offer investors up to a 50 percent credit on eligible investments, with a maximum credit of $100,000. Proposed by STAC and enacted into law by Governor Donald Carcieri and the General Assembly in 2006, the Innovation Tax Credit is designed to attract and retain serial entrepreneurs and stimulate economic growth in high-wage, high-growth industries.

STAC Funding Program Set to Invest Additional $1.5 Million in Collaborative Research

Building on the success of its inaugural year, the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council's Research Alliance program announced that it will invest an additional $1.5 million in research that promotes collaboration across the state's academic and commercial institutions. Continuation of the Research Alliance and Collaborative Research Award program, launched in 2006, was made possible through support from Governor Donald L. Carcieri and the Rhode Island General Assembly.

Rhode Island Launches Tax Credit for Investment in Innovation-based Industries

Rhode Island will now offer a new tax credit to encourage investment in high-growth, high-wage innovation industries and support the state's entrepreneurs. The Rhode Island Innovation Tax Credit, proposed by the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC), will offer investors up to a 50 percent credit on eligible investments, with a maximum tax credit of $100,000.

Justice Robert Flanders to Chair Commission to Strengthen Research at URI

Justice Robert G. Flanders, Jr. was named Chair of a commission charged with making recommendations to state leadership on actions to enhance research activity at the University of Rhode Island. The URI Commission for Innovation will propose actions to strengthen URI's position as a nationally competitive public research university and a key institution in Rhode Island's effort to grow an innovation economy.

Collaboration Rules at STAC/EPSCoR Event

Collaboration was the buzzword of the day at "Expanding Rhode Island's Research and Development Capacity through Collaboration," a one-day forum, hosted on April 12 by the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) and Rhode Island's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). Nearly 100 participants attended the event including members of Rhode Island's academic and commercial research community, and business and community leaders interested in supporting collaborative research in Rhode Island.

On Thursday, April 12, National Science Foundation Deputy Director Kathleen Olsen will be among those participating in "Expanding Rhode Island's Research and Development Capacity Through Collaboration," a one-day forum presented by Rhode Island's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) and The Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC.) The event, free and open to the public, will bring together researchers, policy leaders, and members of the business community to discuss tools for creating successful collaborations and showcase "best practice" projects happening across the state's research community.

R.I. Invests $1.5M in collaborative research; 32 Scientists, 15 Institutions Receive Funding for Collaborative Projects

The Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) announced the first round of recipients for its Rhode Island Research Alliance Collaborative Research Award program. The awards will provide direct support to 32 scientists from 15 research organizations across Rhode Island. The program is part of a $1.5 million effort to grow R&D capacity in the state, address critical problems of Rhode Islanders, and spur economic development.
