Grand Opening for New Biomanufacturing Facility in Smithfield, R.I.

On Thursday, June 21, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALXN) held its grand opening for its new biomanufacturing facility in Smithfield, Rhode Island. On hand to celebrate this milestone event were 100 new employees of this facility, Governor Donald L. Carcieri, David Keiser, Alexion's President and Chief Operating Officer, Saul Kaplan, the RIEDC's Executive Director, Senator John J. Tassoni, and Stephen G. Tocco, Smithfield Town Council President. This facility represents a $50 million investment on the part of Alexion to manufacture Soliris™ (eculizumab) for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Alexion is the newest member of Rhode Island's growing healthcare and life sciences sector, which employs 35,000 individuals and represents 1,400 businesses operating in the medical and biotechnology industries.
